In a film that he both stars and directs, one would think this picture a vanity project, but to my surprise Mel Gibson comes across completely believable in the role of Wallace, and captures the authentic look and dialectics with surprising aplomb. His historical performance is truly top notch, and any viewer would be convinced by her portrayal. What is even more surprising is how well directed the picture is, despite him starring in the lead. One would think that doing both jobs would cause one area to suffer, but in Braveheart Mel Gibson proves himself a true master craftsman, clearly portraying a vision of both his character the heroic story of loss and patriotism.
Although certain credits such as writer, and producer are shared with other folks, it’s clear that Braveheart is truly Gibson’s film, full of the nuance that makes his work so visceral. The villains are truly evil, and evil is punished in life. Despite Gibson’s current public image, he is a true master filmmaker, and for proof look no further than Braveheart, winner of best picture in 1995.
